Going hand-in-hand with my article on considering becoming a full-time writer is being able to take charge and control your writing career. This will help you be more efficient and get more overall satisfaction out of your writing. Here are some ideas on how you can do that.

  1. Set Goals – Not just the big ones like “I want to be on the bestseller list,” but also small ones that can act as stepping stones and help you meet the larger ones. Goals such as “I will write XX amount of articles this month” or “I am going to try this new form of promoting” can help you keep focused and better able to plan out how you want to approach your career.
  2. Make An Effort To Reach Your Goals – Don’t just talk the talk. There is no point setting goals if you aren’t going to make an effort to reach them. This means thinking and planning out how you are going to reach them. Consider your resources (like time, for example) and decide how much you are going to have to devote to your goal.
  3. Control Your Budget – Being able to be flexible with your budget will give you a better handle on what you will want to write vs. what you will need to write. There will probably come a time when you will have to bite the bullet and write something that you aren’t really interested in, but you can help to make those times few and far between with a solid financial plan.
  4. Always Have A Plan B – Writing isn’t the most stable of careers (especially if you are freelance), so to minimize the amount of stress on your sanity it would help if you plan for the worst before it happens. Make sure you have enough money in savings to get you by if you have 2 or 3 slow months.
  5. Know When To Say “No” – Know when that offered contract is a waste of your time. Learn to recognize early when that project will require more to put in than you will get out.
